Gray bunny

I'm Kelly and I'm not in LA anymore, which is exciting. But probably only for me and the husband, because now I don't really have much craziness to talk about. I'm still checking up on you all from time to time though.

Good audiobooks?

I’m sorry that I now only ask questions of Tumblr; moving across the country in less than a couple weeks has made our lives a bit hectic but not very interesting to anyone but us.

But we will be driving cross-country beginning on Memorial Day, and I’m looking for some audio book recommendations. The last few I’ve tried have been failures- either books too free-form to listen to (like THE ROAD, which I’m now reading) or those with terrible readers (reader of BLOOD MERIDIAN had ridiculous mouth noise).  And those just both happen to be Cormac McCarthy.

So you know what’s good- quality readers reading something that’s easily followed while still being complicated or interesting enough to be engaging.  I, personally, would probably listen to Stephen Fry reading me every Harry Potter book again, but Kris doesn’t have that kind of tolerance for repetition.  Thoughts are appreciated!

I'm almost finally allowed to say it

I haven’t been posting partially because I had crazy big news that I wasn’t allowed to share, but I got the official word and am just declaring it sharing time.

I’m leaving the beautiful, silly place I work and Los Angeles and the west coast altogether to take a job at another beautiful, though maybe slightly-less-silly place: the National Audiovisual Conservation Center, home to the Library of Congress’s motion picture department.  Kris and I are overjoyed to be headed back to the east coast, more homey-feeling territory closer to our family and with a more reasonable cost of living.

But I’ve been in LA six years, and I admit that I will miss it.  The tacos.  The not having to look at the weather because it’s always the same.  But mostly I’m going to miss my job and all the crazy people I work with, to the point that I can’t type this sentence without crying.  It’s pretty much the only real job I’ve ever had, and I know more than anyone how lucky I’ve been to have had this experience.

God, I can’t believe we’re going to have to pay for movies from now on.

I start a month from tomorrow.  If you find yourself near Culpeper, VA and want to check out the awesomest place ever built for a film collection, let me know.

And here, my friends, is the problem with Twitter: Everyone wants to believe that everyone else thinks they’re important, because everyone, at their core, is a narcissist. And how better to give yourself an inflated sense of importance, than to think that there are groups of people who are reading a 140 word post you’ve written that says, “Going to the store to look for cereal. Hope they have Chex! -

Oh, You Have 70 Thousand Twitter Followers? Congratulations, Shitbag. (via jessicalindsey)

Yes, the guy referenced is of course a total douche. Ugh, “People have called me…”  But, can’t you just replace the word Twitter in this quote with Tumblr, or blogging, or Facebook status updates? Except that in some other venues, you’re asking people for more of their time to read your crap that doesn’t matter?  We all do it in all sorts of places- singling out Twitter as being inherently douchey doesn’t really make any sense.  Because I kind of just like to know what my favorite British people and favorite people in real life are up to.  If I didn’t, I wouldn’t follow them. And I certainly don’t expect anyone to follow me- it’s just an easy way for me to keep tabs on what I’ve been doing because I have the memory of a goldfish these days. Plus, now my officemate and I don’t have to have the “How was your weekend?” conversation on Monday mornings because we already know.  Sometimes we don’t even talk to each other at all on Mondays.  Okay, that’s not really healthy, but it makes me laugh.

I just have to say....

I’m on a plane, on the internet.  I love you, Virgin America, and your $99 each way cross country flights!

Aww mushy

So, this is a weird thing to think about, especially because we spent so much of the first half of our relationship doing the long-distance thing, but Kris and I realized while he was driving me to the airport tonight that this will be the first night we’ve spent apart since we got married almost 3 years ago. Sad! It’s only two nights though. I’ll miss you buddy! Okay, sorry, I’m done.

Good book?

I’m going to be travelling for the next few days and need something interesting to read: not too heavy, not too light.  I tend to not read many new books (there’s so many others to catch up on), but I like Michael Chabon, the Zadie Smith that I’ve read, and just enjoyed Dennis Lehane’s THE GIVEN DAY that was suggested by the master of all good things, Lee.

So, I’m off to Borders in a couple hours- any suggestions?

Update: Ooo, Jessica, good call!  I should have done that.  I couldn’t find any of the things that Dan and Lee suggested (well, none of the things Dan suggested— I wanted Little Children by Tom Perrotta and they didn’t have that particular one). So I somehow ended up with Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.  I really suck at shopping for light reading.  At least it’s short.

I married a very immature woman. It didn’t work out. See if this is not immature to you: I would be home in the bathroom taking a bath and my wife would walk right in whenever she felt like… and sink my boats. -

Woody Allen

I’m watching episode 1 of Make ‘Em Laugh, the PBS special that aired a few weeks back that’s now on DVD. This quote (which I’d never heard) is from that. Great stuff.

Great series.  Keep your eye out for my co-worker Joe Adamson, who’s an expert on silent comedy.  I didn’t know he was in it until he came on screen, it’s a very rare and weird occurrence to see people you know on TV.  For me, anyway.

Shitter.
I always felt like Seth Rogen was bordering on the douchebag line, but the fact he’s friends with Pete Wentz confirms he’s gone full douchebag.

It’s not his real twitter. He doesn’t have one. It’s amazing how easily we’re all fooled by the inclusion of the word “Official” with regards to anything online.
“Well, it says it’s official. Sooooooo….”

And I almost met Seth Rogen recently and he was lovely. Laughed just as much you’d think he does (which was a lot).

You all remember Nickel Creek, right? No? What the hell is wrong with you?
Anyhow, Sara has a new album out. She performed a song from it on Jimmy Fallon last night and you can watch it here.
Recommended if you enjoy the fiddle and/or John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin, who is inexplicably on bass.

Yay Sara! That’s weird about John Paul Jones, but the Watkins do have a lot of friends— crazy people play with them all the time at their Watkins Family Hour shows.

i see all this love for David Tennant, but what about THE NINTH, Christopher Eccleston??

Chris was great, truly, I mean, what’s better than the Empty Child-Doctor Dances two parter?  But then he abandoned us, and David is Yummy McAdorablepants.  And a good cryer.  And Scottish.  That is all.

Uh oh...

Felicia Day just tweeted that her episode of Dollhouse, episode 13, isn’t going to air.  She probably wasn’t supposed to tell us that….
